Can hypnotherapy support you in managing your drinking?

We all need a way to switch off — something to help us relax after a busy day. For many people, a glass of wine or a drink in the evening can feel like a reward. But over time, that one drink can slowly become more. Without even realising it, you might feel as though you’re no longer in control of when or how much you drink.

When alcohol begins to impact your relationships, your health, or your sense of self, it can feel overwhelming.

Hypnotherapy may support you in:

  • Becoming more aware of your drinking patterns
  • Gaining insight into emotional or unconscious triggers
  • Feeling more in control of your choices
  • Exploring healthier ways to unwind and self-soothe

Because we’re all unique, it’s important that therapy is tailored to your individual needs and experiences.

A story of change

One client I worked with came to me after her husband had moved out due to her drinking. She was drinking a couple of bottles of wine every evening after work — not because she wanted to feel drunk, but because it had become her way of coping with stress.

Over four sessions, we gently explored what was beneath that pattern. What emerged was a touching memory from when she was six years old — holidays with her dad by a lake. He would have a few drinks and she was allowed to run free, get muddy, and feel completely happy.

Her subconscious had stored that association: wine equals warmth, freedom, and happiness. As an adult in a stressful job, that old link quietly resurfaced — but in a way that no longer served her. Once she recognised this connection, she felt freer. The drinking stopped feeling necessary, and she was able to make new, healthier choices.

Another example – every journey is different

Another client was referred by his wife. He wasn’t drinking every night, but when he went out socially, he struggled to stop. For him, the shift came not through finding a deeper cause, but through developing awareness.

After five sessions, he had a new strategy: recognising the tipping point and choosing to drink a pint of water instead. It sounded simple, but for him it worked — because once the subconscious understands the new pattern, the change can feel surprisingly natural.

Hypnotherapy doesn’t offer a one-size-fits-all solution — but it can provide a supportive, focused space for you to understand your relationship with alcohol and create new habits that feel more in line with the life you want to live.
